We had a great time Saturday night. We had two full tables with 18 players. It was nice to see several new players come out. We played for about 2.5 hours and then broke for hamburgers and hotdogs. Thanks to Bach, Phong, Charles and John for cooking those burgers and dogs. Hey John Dinh, lesson learned: If you get knocked out early, you get stuck with the cooking so don't get knocked out John :).

1st place went to Jimmy "Luckbox" Vo. Jimmy couldn't lose and could have played any two cards blind and still win. He tortured his opponents by sucking out on them. Runner runner flush, A6 vs A2 and he pairs the 2…I could go on. Even my AK of hearts couldn't compete with his offsuit Jack 10. However, Jimmy played well and had such a big lead that no one could catch up. Nice job Jimmy!!!!

2nd place went to Lan Nguyen. Lan always makes the final table but this is her first time cashing. 3rd place went to Tri "the Killer" Phan. Tri also finally cashed for the first time. Nice job to Lan and Tri.

Vincent Vo was once again the bubble boy. He played so well but the cards didn't cooperate. Eventually Vincent will cash. It might take 10 more tries but I know he'll be able to do it. Nguyen Luu tried to defend his title but got knocked by yours truly. (Hey Nguyen, next time I raise, don't move all in on me unless you have AA :) ).

Finally, thanks to Dave Ngo for hosting. He was a great host and everyone had a fantastic time.
I am headed to Atlantic City for the Borgata Open so I am not quite sure when I'll host the next tourney. If anyone wants to host a poker tournament in the next couple of months, let me know.

Until then,

Bob

Awesome turnout for our latest Wine and Beer Lovers Group event at Best Cellars in Arlington. We had over 25 new and familiar faces meet for the wine tasting that was hosted by their knowledgeable staff. We tasted 6 wines from around the world accompanied by light snacks. Afterwards, we had dinner at nearby Cafe Asia. Thanks to everyone who came out and to Lou for organizing. Look for the next Wine and Beer Lovers event in the coming weeks.

3

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Charity Volleyball Tournament and Picnic held on June 1. We did well for a team that was assembled at the last second and had no practices. All proceeds went to a charity that helps orphans and disabled children of Vietnam.

4

Our first big event of the summer was a huge success. Over 40 people came to the showing of "Three Seasons" followed by a rooftop BBQ at one of the nicest condos in DC. Although the BBQ was interrupted by a thunderstorm, we managed to get all the food cooked and enjoyed being outdoors. The view from the rooftop was magnificent. Thanks to Vinh and Chau for organizing a great event and Peter for taking great pictures.

Thanks to everyone who came out for Poker Night III. Congratulations to the winners!!!

1st Place = Nguyen Luu

2nd Place = John Dinh

3rd Place = Annie Nguyen

The bubble boy was Vincent Vo. He came so close but the other three players had too many chips. We all knew it was Nguyen's night when on the first hand at the final table, Nguyen picks up pockets 5's and is up against pocket 6's, pocket 9's, and Victor's pocket Kings. Nguyen spikes a 5 on the turn and a 5 on the river for quad 5's.

Thanks to Tri Phan for allowing us to play at his home even though he was not there and to Kirk McGinely for helping to set up.

I don't know when we'll play again as I am headed to Vegas for the WSOP at the end of June. So we'll probably have a respite for a while. I hope everyone has a great summer!!!

Bob

Thanks for coming out to the co-sponsored happy hour at Modern to support the Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association. Enjoy the pictures.

7

We had a strong turnout for our second Movie Club event. Daughter from Danang is an emotional and powerful movie that most Vietnamese Americans can relate to. It was thought provoking and allowed members to engage in active discussion. Thanks to everyone who came.

8

We had a good turnout for our first happy hour of the spring. It was a sunny 75 degree day and we found tables in the outdoor patio at Zen Bistro. Thanks to everyone who came out

9

We had a decent turnout for the premiere of the movie Trai Tim Be Bong or "The Little Heart." This was one of the stops that the director, cinemetographer, and lead actress made in the US in promoting the release of this powerful drama. The team answered all our questions after the film. Special thanks to Christian Oh from the APA Film Festival for coordinating this showing. Also helping out were:
The Institute of Vietnamese Culture and Education (IVCE)
Asian American Student Union of UMD
National Association of Asian American Professionals of DC
9th Annual DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival

The outdoor activities/adventures group hosted its 1st unofficial outing on Sat 3/29/2008 to the annual National Cherry Blossoms Festival in DC. A couple of us met up and had a good time marveling at the dreamy cherry blossoms surrounding the tidal basin, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. Some of us also went to the Opening Ceremony at the National Building, where Miss Universe 2007 (from Japan) made an appearance. Hope you'll enjoy at our next event. Cheers!!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Young Asian Professionals Happy Hour to support the Catalyst Foundation and their work in Vietnam. We had a very strong turnout from the Organization of Vietnamese Profesionals. Please continue to support the charities that work towards making a difference in the lives of the the underpriveleged. Enjoy the pictures.

Well we finally have a champion. Peter took first place and won $320. (Drinks on Peter next time you see him!!!!) He played well by coming back as a short stack and taking a huge lead when we became three handed. Congratulations Peter!!!

Jimmy took 2nd place. When he started heads up with Peter, his stack was so small that Peter could have gone all in blind 10 straight times and still win. It also didn’t help that Liz was dealing Peter monster starting hands. I think Peter started with an Ace in the hole every time. Jimmy offered great commentary. He should try and replace Mike Sexton on the World Poker Tour.

Bob took 3rd place. He is only one of the four to cash again as Phong and Vince busted out early.

Drumroll….the bubble boy was Quin. He had a huge stack but ran into Peter’s pocket Aces. Quin played well and I am sure he will cash next time. (Thanks Peter, you allowed Jimmy and I to cash).

Thanks to Tri Phan for hosting again. He does a great job as it takes time set up and clean up for all you degenerates. Also thanks to Annie and her friends for bring the fruit to help stem people’s hunger.

I hope everyone had a good time and learned a thing or two about poker and met new people. Also thanks for arriving on time as we started at 7 PM. Please check the OVP website for the next tourney.

Take care,

Bob

Thanks to everyone who came out on a Friday night to enjoy a glass (or a few glasses) of wine with us. Each member brought a bottle of their favorite wine to share with everyone. Special thanks to Liz for organizing and bringing food and to Lou for allowing us to party at his nice condo.

14

One of our best events yet! Thanks to Chau for organizing this viewing of, in my opinion, one of the better Vietnamese-themed movies to come out in a long time. It was a powerful movie that combined great acting and a deep plot. Thanks to Vinh for allowing us to use the Rec Room in his condo.

15

Thanks to everyone who came out to our happy hour despite the cold weather. Zen Bistro and Wine Bar did a spectaular job hosting our group. Hope to see everyone at the next event.

16

The Vietnamese Book Club would like to thank Lan Cao for taking time out from her busy schedule to meet with us and answer our questions. Her insight, experiences, and direction allowed us to gain a better understanding of her novel Monkey Bridge. As a representative voice and a leader of the Vietnamese American community, Lan Cao's accomplishments continue to be an inspiration.

17

We had a strong turnout for the February Language Exchange meeting at Teaism, in downtown DC. Thanks to Son and Yen for conducting a good meeting. By all accounts, this was productive for everyone.

The Vietnamese Language Exchange Group welcomes everyone from all skill levels who want to improve their Vietnamese. This includes both speaking and reading. Please join the Vietnamese Language Exchange Group to receive news on future events and meetings.

The 2008 Organization of Vietnamese Professionals Tet Party was a resounding success. We had TONS of food contributed by everyone, and some traditional board games and poker. Thanks to Tri Phan for welcoming us into his beautiful house and trusting that we wouldn't spill red wine on his nice carpet or light a string of red firecrackers indoors. Special thanks to Lan Nguyen and Bach Pham for helping out with the food preparation and cleanup.

19

Click on the album title to view pictures. We had a tremendous turnout for the Co-Sponsored Happy Hour at Gua Rapo. Special Thanks to J.T. and the 20s & 30s Asian Going Out Group for organizing a great event for a good cause. We had a record turnout in support of Sunflower Mission (www.sunflowermission.org). Their goal to help the disadvantaged Vietnamese population in rural Vietnam is a noble cause. Thanks to everyone who came out and donated to this organization.

Click on the title of the album to see pictures. I want to thank everyone for coming out and making Poker Night successful. We had 14 players duking it out. The tournament showcased both beginners and advanced players with some beginners doing very well. The tournament went long into the night and finally ended at midnight when four players decided to chop the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The four finishers are Jackie, Vinh, Phong, and Bob. Lisa Nguyen was the bubble girl. Poor Lisa. Next time though.

Thanks again to Tri Phan for hosting. He did a fantastic job and we are all appreciative that we could play in his home. We will probably do another poker event in March. Enjoy the pics!!

21

Despite the wet weather, bowling at Strike Bethesda was a great time. John Dinh was the outstanding bowler of the night with two 150+ games. Thanks to everyone who came out.
